Dry eye was first defined as a disease—not just a syndrome—in 1995. In part 1 of this 2-part episode, Drs. Craig and Nichols explain that evidence had evolved showing that tear film quality was as important as quantity, leading TFOS to arrive at an updated definition in 2007. Research into the clinical and basic science components of the disease continued to accelerate, and emerging understanding indicated the need for an updated definition. The group was very cognizant of the importance of creating a definition that was global and would work for clinicians worldwide.
