Clinchfield 800: The 72-Year-Old Locomotive that Pulls Freight

Welcome back to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. It’s February 28th, 2020 and we’re trackside yet again with our friends from the Heritage Railroad. Known for its classic diesel locomotives, shared with the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum, the Heritage Railroad is always certain to brighten any railfan’s cloudy day. The Heritage Railroad, the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum known as “SARM,” and East Tennessee Rail Car Services all occupy the K-25 site and are intertwined with the same personnel and volunteers. The Heritage Railroad leases equipment from the museum which means classic consists like this are a weekly occurrence.

Home at last after three years of pulling special trains on CSX, the Orlando & Northwestern, and the Ohio Rail Experience is Clinchfield Railroad 800. Since being restored in 2017 by CSX Transportation, 800 hasn’t yet been on the property of the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum until now and today would be pulling a freight train with High Hood GP30 no. 2561, which is one of six remaining of its kind in 2020. Still in primer, the museum plans to repaint the iconic locomotive into the Southern Railway “Tuxedo” Scheme in the future. The two veteran locomotives will be hauling a five-car train from the K-25 Site to the Norfolk Southern interchange point at Blair. These cars are carrying trans-loaded materials for an online customer.
