Atherosclerosis is the abnormal accumulation of lipids and products resulting from an inflammatory response in the walls of arteries and is the leading cause of death in the Western world. Heart attacks, angina pectoris, peripheral arterial disease, and strokes are common sequelae of atherosclerosis. In some cases, lowering serum lipid concentrations have been shown to prevent the sequelae of atherosclerosis and decrease mortality in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease and hyperlipidemia.

Antihyperlipidemic drugs are those drugs which are used to reduce the level of bad cholesterol from body. there are basically 05 main types of lipoprotein (Lipoprotein = Lipid + Protein) which carry cholesterol and triglycerides. these are -
1- LDL = Low density Lipoprotein
2- IDL= Intermediate density Lipoprotein
3- VLDL= very Low-density Lipoprotein
4- Chylomicrone
5- HDL= High-density Lipoprotein

These are the basic sequence of atherogenicity too. Lipid and cholesterol are transported via lipoprotein, and LDL is considered as bad cholesterol because it carries cholesterol from the liver to body, so when it increases that means there is an increase in lipid level.

HDL is known as good cholesterol because it transports the excess cholesterol from peripheral cell to liver so that it may be metabolized and may get eliminated.

CHD= Coronary heart disease is one of the major cause of death in any countries.

Antihyperlipidemic drugs may be classified into the following class-
1- HMG Co Enzyme inhibitors (Statins)
2- Bile acid resin
3- Fabric Acids
