Introducing the Netherlands: Poverty - Studium Generale - Tilburg University

Introducing the Netherlands: Poverty - Studium Generale - Tilburg University Did you know there is a lot of hidden poverty in the Netherlands? In the week leading up to World Poverty Day, I*ESN, Quiet and Studium Generale reflected on the fact that almost one million people in the Netherlands experience the effects of poverty every day.

Although the Netherlands is one of the richest countries in Europe, there is poverty here, too. Because of the social security safety net, poverty in the Netherlands is not a matter of physical survival. Rather, many live in relative poverty, in the sense that they cannot reach a minimal living standard, related to the general level of prosperity in society.

Speakers are Femke Roosma (Assistant Professor in Sociology at Tilburg University), who explains more about the current state of poverty in The Netherlands and the history of the welfare state, and Ralf Embrechts (co-founder of Quiet), who talks about different causes and effects of poverty and the Quiet initiative.
